冬の代表的な気圧配置である「西高東低」ですが、何故このような気圧配置になるのでしょうか?
というのも理科の入試問題で、
「冬は北西からの季節風が吹く日が多くなる理由を簡潔に書きなさい。」
という問題があったんですね。
答えは「西高東低の気圧配置になるから」でした。
本来は西高東低の気圧配置になる理由まで答えるべきだと思うんですけどね。
出題者の意図である
「西高東低の気圧配置を答えさせたい」
と言う思いを汲み取れれば、西高東低の気圧配置になる理由を知らなくても正解できます。
それは置いておいて、何故西高東低の気圧配置になるのか少し考えてみました。
考える上で重要な事は点で考えるとわかりにくく、空間でとらえる事です。
緯度、経度、標高の空間的に考えてください。
なお、西高東低は日本の西に高気圧があり、日本の東に低気圧がある状態ですね。
西の高気圧
北半球は秋分~春分までの間、地軸の傾きが太陽と反対方向になり、日照時間が少なくなります。
冬至で日照時間の少なさはピークを迎えます。
日照時間が短いと空気が冷える時間が長くなります。
この大陸は海上ではなく地上です。
同時に地面もどんどん冷やされます。
地面は動けません。
空気はどんどん冷やされ、密度が高くなります。
東の低気圧
東は太平洋です。
日照時間の条件は同じですが、海上です。
水は4℃で最も重くなりますが、空気の様に流動的に変化します。
夜冷やされた海水が下降、温かい海水が上昇し、海水の表面は大陸程は冷えません。
西の空気と東の空気の差
西の空気と東の空気の温度に差が生まれます。
温度の差が密度の差となり、それは重さの差でもあります。
重い空気は山の裾の様に地面で周囲に広がります。
軽い空気は煙の様に上昇し周囲に広がります。
ここで、循環が発生します。
西の空気が重くなり下降し、東に流れ、東の空気が軽くなり上昇し、西に流れる。
西の重い空気の下降が高気圧、東の軽い空気の上昇が低気圧です。
加えて
日本が大陸の東側に位置しているからこのような気圧配置になります。
日本以外の地域で冬の気圧配置を予想してみるのも面白いかもしれません。
また、南高北低についても考えてみると面白いと思います。
複雑な要素が絡み合うので、別の知識や見方も必要になります。
